Is it permissible to perform masah (wiping) over what is placed on the hair for adornment, such as fabrics, plastic and metal pieces, and hair ties, whether they are numerous or few? And is it permissible to coil each section of hair separately [by coiling it from the end of the strand to its beginning and securing it with a metal piece] or to wear many braids and perform masah over them?

Wiping the head is one of the obligatory acts of ablution (wudu’), and the preponderant opinion is that it is obligatory to wipe the entire head. There are two methods for wiping: The first is to wipe the head from the front to the nape, and then return the hands to the front. As for the second method, which is suitable for someone with long hair, it involves wiping the entire head in the direction of the hair without disturbing its arrangement.

A woman must remove any adornment covering part of her head during ablution if it prevents water from reaching [the scalp], according to the view that requires wiping the entire head. However, a concession has been made for women regarding wiping the head, so it is sufficient for her to wipe the front part of her head.

There is no harm for a woman in tying her hair or braiding it and wiping over it during ablution.

As for a woman wiping over a hair bun, there is no harm in it, but it is disliked for her to tie her hair on top of her head in such a way that it resembles the humps of Bactrian camels.
