What is the meaning of "al-lamam" in the Qur'anic verse: "And those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, except for al-lamam"?

In Surah An-Najm, the verse: (And to Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth, that He may recompense those who do evil for what they have done and recompense those who do good with the best [reward] – those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, except for [minor] lapses. Indeed, your Lord is vast in forgiveness) refers to the characteristics of the righteous. Interpreters have differed on the meaning of "al-lamam" (lapses) with several opinions, including: 1. Committing a sin once without returning to it, even if it was a major sin. 2. Thoughts that pass through the heart. 3. Unintentional glances. 4. What Muslims did during the pre-Islamic era (Jahiliyyah) before Islam. 5. The majority of scholars believe it refers to minor sins.

Ibn Abbas supported his view with the Hadith of Abu Hurairah (Indeed, Allah has decreed for the son of Adam his share of Zina...), to explain that al-lamam includes what originates from the eye, tongue, and self, that does not lead to a prescribed punishment (Hadd).

Al-Khattabi and An-Nawawi held that al-lamam refers to minor sins that are forgiven by avoiding major sins, citing the verse: (If you avoid the major sins which you are forbidden, We will remove from you your lesser sins). Linguistically, al-lamam is an inclination towards something or seeking it without persistence. Authentic Sunnah supports this meaning, such as the Hadith of Aisha concerning the slander incident (If you have committed a sin, then seek Allah's forgiveness), meaning you committed a sin, but it was not habitual for you. Al-Sa'di combined both meanings, stating that al-lamam refers to minor sins that one does not persist in, or that a servant commits rarely, and these fall under Allah's forgiveness. The verse does not intend to permit committing al-lamam, but rather that minor sins committed by way of slip or mistake are forgiven by avoiding major sins.
