The question

Is it permissible for a Muslim man to marry a Christian woman who appointed a Muslim man to be her guardian in marriage, especially in Western countries where the Christian woman's guardian does not interfere in her affairs? And is the guardianship of a Christian father over his Muslim daughter valid in her marriage to a Muslim man?

The answer

The Christian guardian's astonishment at the request to marry his ward to a Muslim does not invalidate his guardianship, unless he refuses, in which case his guardianship transfers to the next guardian in line. If all guardians refuse, then the guardianship transfers to any body that oversees the affairs of Christians. A Muslim cannot be the guardian for the marriage of a female disbeliever. If a Christian woman embraces Islam, her disbelieving father cannot be the guardian for her marriage.
