No one knows when they will die or in what land; that is part of the knowledge of the unseen which Allah has kept exclusively for Himself. There are no specific signs indicating the approaching end of life; if a person knew that, they might become lenient with sins. However, it is out of Allah's mercy that He concealed this, so that the servant remains striving in repentance and good deeds. Nevertheless, some signs, such as a serious illness or reaching an advanced age, may indicate the nearing end of life. Upon feeling the proximity of death, one must repent to Allah, redress injustices, increase good deeds, and have a good opinion of Allah. The throes of death are the last means by which Allah expiates sins for His servant, and it is a hardship that Allah may alleviate with glad tidings and steadfastness for the believer. All suffering that afflicts a person expiates their sins and raises their ranks if they endure patiently and seek reward from Allah. All good deeds bring the servant closer to their Lord, and among the best of them are frequent remembrance of Allah (dhikr), reciting the Quran, honoring parents, maintaining kinship ties, performing Hajj and Umrah, praying at night, giving charity, having good character, and cooperating in righteousness and piety.
