What is the ruling on an employee's absence from work while her manager signs her in as present?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is not permissible to be late for official working hours or to leave before they end without permission from the employer, as this constitutes a breach of contract. Allah Almighty says: "O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts" (Quran 5:1), and Muslims are bound by their conditions. The permission of the school principal to be late or to leave early does not justify it, unless he is authorized by the employer. If he is not authorized, then it is not permissible for him to grant such permission, and the sin remains upon the latecomer. The portion of the salary corresponding to the time of tardiness is not rightfully his, and he must return it.
