The question

What is the ruling on saying: "O Allah, bless the Muhammadan Essence, the Kind, the Unique, the sun of the sky of secrets, the manifestation of lights, the center of the orbit of majesty, and the pole of the sphere of beauty. O Allah, by His secret with You, and by His journey to You, grant me security from my fear, overlook my stumble, remove my sorrow and eagerness, and be for me and take me to You from myself, and grant me annihilation from myself. And do not make me infatuated with myself, veiled by my senses, and unveil for me every hidden secret, O Living, O Self-Subsisting"?

The answer

This supplication contains several violations: 1. Describing the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with a description not found in the Qur’an or Sunnah, and it involves exaggeration in his praise. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade this, saying: "Do not exaggerate in praising me as the Christians exaggerated in praising 'Isa, son of Mary. Indeed, I am only a slave, so say: 'Allah's slave and His Messenger.'" 2. Seeking intercession with Allah through "the secret of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him," which is an ambiguous phrase. Seeking intercession with Allah through the Prophet's life (his worship and drawing near to Allah) is an innovation and not permissible. Permissible intercession is through the names and attributes of Allah, or through the righteous deeds of the supplicant, or through the supplication of a righteous living person. 3. Asking Allah to reveal to the supplicant a hidden secret is an transgression in supplication, for there is no way to know what Allah has decreed to be hidden.

The authentic supplications established in the Qur’an and Sunnah suffice and render this innovated, fabricated supplication unnecessary.
