Is a man permitted to beat his wife if she disobeys him in bed, knowing that there are Hadiths urging kindness towards women, and beating one's wife does not build a harmonious marital relationship, in addition to the possibility of there being reasons for her refusal, such as pregnancy or illness?

The fundamental principle is the prohibition of a husband striking his wife as long as she is upright. Allah has threatened the oppressive husband, as stated in the verse: "Then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted, Grand." Striking is permitted only in the narrowest of circumstances if the wife becomes defiant (nashazat) and disobedient to her husband, and this striking must be a light, disciplinary measure, not an act of revenge or malice. It must be preceded by admonition and abstention from sharing her bed. The striking mentioned in the Qur'an and Sunnah does not contradict the hadiths that enjoin good treatment of the wife, and striking is not meant to force the wife into sexual intercourse. The Law has specifically allowed the husband to strike, not the wife, because men have guardianship (qawamah) over women in managing family affairs, not out of tyranny or dominance. If a husband deprives his wife of her right to intimacy, she has the right to deny him his, and she can take her case to court or seek a divorce. Persuading the wife through the husband's relatives or her own relatives is the preferable approach.
