What is the correct ruling on cauterization (al-kayy), and how can we reconcile the seemingly contradictory hadiths reported concerning it?

Scholars have divided the Ahadith regarding cauterization into four categories: those indicating its permissibility, such as the Hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him) cauterizing Ubayy; those indicating his dislike for it; those indicating praise for those who abstain from it, like the Hadith of the seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without reckoning, "those who do not get cauterized"; and those indicating its detestability. The reconciliation between these Ahadith is that the prohibition indicates its detestability, while the Prophet's action of it indicates its permissibility when needed. The reason for its detestability is the torment and pain it inflicts upon the soul.
