The question

What is the ruling on the fast of an employee who works at sea, more than 120 km away from the shore, where the call to prayer (adhan) is not made at his place of residence, and he does not know when to begin fasting (imsak) or when to break his fast (iftar), but rather this is determined by the diligence of the young men?

The answer

We thank you for congratulating us on the month of Ramadan and we congratulate you on it. We ask Allah to accept our fasting, prayers, and good deeds. Abstaining from things that break the fast begins at the appearance of true dawn (the light spread across the horizon), and breaking the fast occurs when the entire sun has set. This relies on sighting, which is easier at sea. Diligence is sufficient, for Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. There is no requirement for a calendar or an imsakiyah (Ramadan timetable).
