Is the saying, "Souls are conscripted soldiers; those that recognize one another become harmonious, and those that dispute one another diverge," authentic? What is its evidence in Islam and daily life? Can it be applied to thinking about people or seeing them in a dream, then meeting or contacting them? What is its significance between the sexes, and does it lead to eternal harmony and bonding, such as marriage? Is meeting by chance or contacting someone after one of them has thought about the other considered a meeting of souls?

The hadith: "Souls are like conscripted soldiers; those that recognize each other, come together, and those that do not recognize each other, diverge," is authentic. Its authenticity points to a person's comfort with another without prior acquaintance, and an aversion to a relative. Some scholars attribute this to recognition in the world of spirits ( alam al-dharr ) when Allah asked the souls, "Am I not your Lord?" Similar stories have occurred among the predecessors (Salaf). This could include the affinity between two people and a suitor's inclination towards his fiancée, but it must not be used as a pretext for illicit relationships between the sexes.
