Is a person held accountable for their actions and words while in a state of semi-consciousness or lack of awareness?

The basis of accountability is the establishment and presence of intellect. Thus, whoever is of sound mind at the time of their action is held accountable for their action. Whoever is deprived of intellect due to sleep or unconsciousness is not held accountable, as per the Hadith: "The pen has been lifted from three..." If a person's intellect is absent such that they cannot control their actions, they are not held accountable for what they do; otherwise, they are. Their not being held accountable does not negate their liability for what they destroy, because liability for damages is among the consequential rulings.
