Is it true that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, had a Jewish neighbor whom he treated kindly, or is this information incorrect?

The story of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, having a Jewish neighbor whom he visited when he fell ill and offered Islam to, has been narrated in several weak traditions, none of which are sound. Examples include the narrations of Buraydah, Abu Hurayrah, Anas, and Ibn Abi Husayn.

As for the popular addition that this Jewish neighbor used to harm the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, by placing garbage and thorns in his path, it has no basis in the books of Sunnah, nor has it been mentioned by any of the scholars. Rather, it became popular among later preachers and ascetics without any supporting evidence, and this is unlikely given the absence of any objection from the Companions.

What is authentically established in Sahih Muslim, from the Hadith of Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, is that a Jewish boy used to serve the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. When the boy fell ill, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, visited him and offered him Islam, whereupon he embraced it. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, then departed, saying: "Praise be to Allah who saved him from the Fire." This contradicts the idea of harm.
