The question

What is the meaning of "takhtanoon" in terms of its literal sense and religious ruling in Allah's saying: (Allah knew that you were betraying yourselves)? And what is meant by "beyond that" and how is one transgressing in Allah's saying: (But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors)? And what is the ruling on a husband fondling his wife in the place of the child's descent to satisfy her desire due to sexual frigidity, and does that necessitate expiation?

The answer

The exegetes said regarding Allah's saying: "Allah knew that you were deceiving yourselves," that it means you were betraying yourselves by engaging in intercourse during the nights of fasting. And whoever disobeys Allah has betrayed himself by bringing punishment upon it. The root of betrayal is the failure to fulfill a trust, and it is forbidden. As for the second verse, its meaning is the prohibition of enjoyment with anyone other than one's wife or what one's right hand possesses (a female slave). So, whoever exceeds that has transgressed the limits of Allah. It is permissible for the husband to fondle his wife in any way of enjoyment, provided that the anus is avoided in all circumstances, and the vagina during menstruation and post-natal bleeding.
