The question

Are my actions during Hajj correct: performing Tawaf al-Ifadah and Sa'i on the Day of Tarwiyah, then going to 'Arafah and Muzdalifah and staying there until 3 AM, then stoning and performing tahallul and returning home, then stoning the Jamarat on the Days of Tashreeq and returning home and staying there instead of Mina? And do I owe a sacrifice? What is the correct procedure for the Nights of Tashreeq?

The answer

The Ifadah circumambulation (Tawaf al-Ifadah) is not valid on theawm al-Tarwiyah (the Day of Quenching Thirst). Its time begins from the dawn of the Day of Sacrifice (Yawm al-Nahr) or the middle of the night preceding it. It is a pillar of Hajj without which the Hajj is not valid. Whoever omits it remains in a state of ihram and must return to perform it. As for the Sa'i (ritual brisk walking), its validity is conditioned upon being performed after a recognized circumambulation, such as Tawaf al-Ifadah or Tawaf al-Qudum (Tawaf of Arrival). It is preferable to remain in Muzdalifah until dawn. Departing Mina before the end of the night incurs different rulings among the schools of thought, such as a compensatory sacrifice (dam) according to the Malikis, or charity (sadaqah) according to the Shafi'is and Hanbalis. The nights in Mina must be spent there, and it is recommended to increase the remembrance of Allah Almighty and the takbir (utterance of 'Allahu Akbar') during the Days of Tashreeq, which are days of eating, drinking, and remembering Allah.
