Is it permissible to accept Zakat from money tainted by doubt?
It is required to give out zakat from lawful wealth, and it is not appropriate to give it out from wealth that is doubtful. However, if one does give it out, it is sufficient, because the default assumption is that one's wealth is lawful, and it is permissible for the poor person to accept it. The jurists have stipulated that it is disliked to give charity from wealth that is doubtful, and they have recommended choosing the most lawful wealth, furthest removed from what is unlawful and doubtful, based on the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "Whoever gives charity equal to a date-fruit from good earnings – and Allah does not accept but that which is good – Allah will accept it with His right hand..." And his saying: "O people, indeed Allah is good and does not accept but that which is good."
