Is it permissible for a university student to pray Jumu'ah (Friday prayer) in the mosque of the university dormitory, which closes during holidays?
The soundest opinion is that the validity of Friday prayer does not require it to be performed in a mosque. This is the view of the majority of scholars. Abu Hanifa held this view, while Al-Shafi'i disagreed, stipulating that it must be performed within a building. The majority based their argument on the actions of Mus'ab ibn Umayr, who led the Ansar in Friday prayer in Hazm al-Nabit in the desert, and on the fact that it is an Eid prayer, thus permissible to perform in a musalla (outdoor prayer area). Some Malikis believe it is a condition that it be performed in a built mosque, but Ibn al-Arabi al-Maliki rejected this. Therefore, there is no harm in praying it in a mosque that closes during school holidays.
