How did Allah destroy the people of Lot? Did Jibreel raise their towns? Is the story real or from the Israʼiliyyat? What is the meaning of "And it is not far from the wrongdoers"? Does it refer to sexually transmitted diseases or stones? Will the warning be fulfilled with the existence of people similar to them in disbelief and action? Were Lot's wife and the women who practiced lesbianism punished with the same torment?
It is mentioned in the Prophetic Sunnah that Gabriel (peace be upon him) gouged out the eyes of Lot's people when they tried to assault his guests. Some of the Tabi'un (followers) mentioned that Gabriel (peace be upon him) lifted the cities of Lot's people with his wing until the inhabitants of the heavens heard the barking of their dogs, and then overturned them. However, this was not reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and most of these narrations are taken from Isra'iliyyat (Judeo-Christian traditions).
Regarding His saying, the Exalted: "And it is not far from the wrongdoers," it means that the dwellings of Lot's people are not far from contemporary disbelievers, or that the stones that rained down on Lot's people are not far from the wrongdoers who commit acts similar to theirs. This is a warning to them.
The punishment encompassed both men and women among Lot's people, because they were all disbelievers who denied the Messenger Lot, and disbelief in denying the Messenger is sufficient for the infliction of punishment.
