The foundation of marital life is affection and mercy. Both spouses must fulfill the rights stemming from the marriage contract. The husband's father erred by insulting the wife, and the husband should have gently prevented him instead of supporting him. Financial support for the wife and household is obligatory upon the husband, and its estimation depends on the circumstances of both spouses. The husband is not permitted to be stingy with his wife, and she has the right to take from his money what suffices her, according to what is customary, if he withholds it. The wife should advise her husband with gentleness and wisdom regarding any sins he commits. She is not obligated to serve his brother or parents, and her husband is not permitted to force her to live with them, as she has the right to an independent residence. If the husband becomes righteous and fulfills her rights, she should praise her Lord. If she is harmed, she has the right to seek a divorce.
