A musalsal hadith is one whose narrators have successively transmitted it, one after another, maintaining a single state or characteristic, whether it be a saying or an action. It is named thus because its links are connected like a chain (silsilah). Examples of musalsal hadith transmitted with a smile include: the hadith from Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) ablution and his smile, and the hadith from Ali ibn Rabi'ah concerning Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) mounting an animal and laughing. Tasalsul (sequential narration) is one of the topics discussed in relation to the isnad (chain of narration) and indicates an increased level of precision in the narration.
