Is it permissible for a working wife to quit her job if she feels that her husband is coveting her salary, and she wishes to allocate her salary for her personal expenses?

Allah Almighty has obligated men to provide for their wives and minor children, as confirmed by His saying: "Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has given some over others and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth," and His saying: "And upon the father is their provision and their clothing according to what is reasonable." The scholars are in unanimous agreement regarding the obligation of the husband's maintenance. Nevertheless, if the wife is well-off and helps her husband, this strengthens affection and love, for married life is built upon love, mercy, and cooperation.

It is not permissible for the husband to force his wife to pay for household expenses, for her money is her own, and she disposes of it according to her will. Nothing of it is lawful for the husband except with her willing consent.

The wife should not leave her work for fear that her husband might covet her salary, unless there is a legitimate impediment or hardship. If the well-to-do wife knows that her not helping her husband will lead to problems, we advise her to help him, in order to achieve benefit and ward off harm, and in accordance with His saying: "And do not forget graciousness among yourselves. Indeed, Allah, of what you do, is Seeing."
