The question

Is it true that Hajj expiates all previous sins, including the abandonment of prayer, based on Hadiths such as "Hajj Mabrur has no reward but Paradise" and "he returns as the day his mother gave birth to him"? And does this apply to what was said to the people of Badr: "Do what you wish, for I have forgiven you"? What is the meaning of "and He guaranteed their liabilities" in the Hadith of Allah's forgiveness for the people of Arafat and those who came after them? And does this include the washing away of sins even if they were like the sand of Alij or the drops of rain?

The answer

The majority of scholars hold that Hajj expiates only minor sins, while major sins require a specific repentance, unless the repentance is sincere ( nasuh), in which case Hajj expiates all sins. As for consequences (injustices between people), most scholars believe that Hajj does not expiate them; rather, rights must be restored to their owners. The that suggests Hajj expiates consequences is weak, some even say it is fabricated, and thus it cannot be used as evidence by those who claim that Hajj expiates injustices. So, Hajj might alleviate the punishment for consequences, but it does not substitute for restoring rights to their owners.
