What is the ruling on speaking, joking, and laughing with those who belittle religion, those who engage in foreplay to sodomy, and those who utter obscene words, especially if there are no others available in the classroom? And what are the limits of maintaining kinship ties that prevent one from being considered a severer of ties?

A Muslim should not sit with the wicked who follow their desires and whims, for it is harmful to both faith and worldly life. They influence those who accompany them and draw them to do as they do.

Allah, the Exalted, says: (And those who follow desires wish that you would deviate tremendously) (An-Nisa: 27).

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Do not accompany anyone but a believer, and let no one eat your food except a pious person."

He also said: "Indeed, the likeness of a good companion and a bad companion is that of one who carries musk and one who blows the bellows."

Thus, the hadith prohibits sitting with those whose company causes harm in religious and worldly matters, and encourages sitting with those whose company brings benefit in both.
