What is the ruling on reading the Qur’an in a group with the intention of memorization?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Memorizing the Noble Qur’an is a religious requirement. The best method for it is to learn from a proficient sheikh who knows the rules [of recitation] and corrects mistakes. As for memorization through group recitation: if it is done by way of تلقين (repetition after the teacher), where the sheikh recites and then the group repeats, there is no harm in it, even though its effectiveness in correcting errors is limited. However, the second method, which is the group repeating in one voice by way of mere repetition, is almost disliked because it is less effective, and memorization often occurs with errors due to the absence of someone to correct them.
