Why did the Companions not ask the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) about masturbation?

The fundamental principle is that a person should only ask about what they need and do not know its ruling, or if the matter is not far from their situation, or if its ruling is clear, or if it has not happened to them; hence, they are not asked: "Why did you not ask?" The Companions did not need to ask about masturbation, for they were among the most jurisprudent and knowledgeable of people, and they only asked about what benefited them. This is indicated by the statement of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them): "I have not seen a people better than the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). They only asked him about thirteen issues until he passed away, all of which are mentioned in the Quran, including: 'They ask you about the sacred month' (Al-Baqarah: 217), and 'They ask you about menstruation' (Al-Baqarah: 222). They would only ask about what benefited them." And perhaps what prevented them from asking was that they knew its ruling from the words of Allah the Almighty: "And those who guard their private parts, except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed. But whoever seeks beyond that - then those are the transgressors" (Al-Mu'minoon: 5-7).
