What is the ruling of Islamic law concerning the husband and wife in this situation?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Some scholars hold that divorce is impermissible except out of necessity, as it is an act of ingratitude for a blessing and the dissolution of a lawful marriage, and thus it is only permissible when necessary. Some people confuse praiseworthy modesty (hayaa') with blameworthy shyness (khajal). Modesty is a beautiful characteristic and a branch of faith, whereas shyness is an excessive, blameworthy form of modesty that indicates weakness and abandoning what is right. If a husband dislikes his wife's modesty, he has erred. If it is blameworthy shyness, he should have helped her overcome it. The Shari'a encourages retaining one's wife even if she is disliked, for there may be much good in that. A believing man does not dislike a believing woman; if he dislikes one of her traits, he will be pleased with another. If the divorce is revocable and the woman is still in her waiting period ('iddah), she should speak with her husband and ask him to take her back, and also ask for his help in overcoming bad habits.
