Is it permissible for the mujahideen to break their fast in Ramadan, given that they are in their own land and are not traveling?

It is permissible for the mujahideen (those engaged in jihad) to break their fast in Ramadan, even if they are in their own lands, to strengthen them for jihad. This is a view chosen by Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah and others. They based their argument on what Muslim narrated from Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said during his journey to conquer Mecca: “Indeed, you have drawn near to your enemy, and breaking the fast is stronger for you.” Also, on what Abu Dawud narrated from some of the Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) who said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) commanding the people to break their fast during his journey in the year of the Conquest, and he said: ‘Gain strength against your enemy.’” Thus, breaking the fast here is for jihad, not for travel. The hardship of jihad is greater than the hardship of travel, and the benefit gained by a mujahid breaking his fast is greater, as Ibn Taymiyyah did when he gave a fatwa (religious edict) to the soldiers to break their fast in their war against the Tatars.
