What are the effects of sin and piety, and what is the way to avoid sin and achieve piety?

Sins have dire consequences for their perpetrator, including: deprivation of knowledge and sustenance, a sense of loneliness in the heart, difficulty in affairs, darkness of the heart, weakness of the body, deprivation of obedience, eradication of life's blessing, the servant's insignificance in the eyes of Allah, and their ill effects afflict both the doer and others. As for avoiding sins, it is achieved by a Muslim's mindfulness of their Lord. Piety (taqwa) towards Allah has praiseworthy effects in this world and the hereafter. In this world: release from distress, facilitation of affairs and knowledge, keen insight, Allah's love and acceptance, good tidings, protection from enemies' plots, acceptance of deeds, salvation from worldly torment, honor, the sweetness of faith, steadfastness upon truth, and glad tidings at the time of death. In the hereafter: expiation of evil deeds, great reward, inheritance of Paradise, being gathered before Allah riding, obtaining the best of delights, and continued affection among the pious. Piety is attained by obeying Allah's commands and avoiding His prohibitions, outwardly and inwardly.
