What is the feeling of jealousy for one's family, nation, and religion, what causes it, and how is it achieved, if one feels nothing when the prohibitions of Allah are violated?
Jealousy over women is an innate human trait, though it may weaken in some individuals.
Ibn Taymiyyah said: "Allah has instilled in humans and other animals an aversion to a man being shared in his place of enjoyment."
Commendable jealousy, which is religiously مطلوب (required/desired), is of three types: 1. Jealousy for Allah: When His prohibitions are violated and His boundaries are transgressed. 2. Jealousy over the heart: When it settles for other than Allah and finds comfort in other than Him. 3. Jealousy over one's sanctity (honor/privacy): When others look upon it.
Jealousy is of two kinds: 1. Jealousy for the Beloved (for Allah): This is anger on His behalf when His rights are belittled, and it is the foundation of religion. 2. Jealousy over the Beloved: This is the beloved's indignation and protective zeal, preventing others from sharing in his beloved. This is of two divisions: a. Praiseworthy jealousy: Occurs when there is suspicion, and Allah loves it. b. Blameworthy jealousy: Occurs without suspicion, and Allah dislikes it; it corrupts love.
The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "Indeed, some jealousy is loved by Allah, and some is hated by Allah. The jealousy that Allah loves is jealousy in suspicion, and the jealousy that Allah hates is jealousy without suspicion."
Praiseworthy jealousy can be obligatory or recommended. Ibn Taymiyyah said: "Beloved jealousy is that which aligns with Allah's jealousy, which is when Allah's prohibitions are violated." Obligatory jealousy for a servant is over his family, and the greatest of it is over his wife. Praiseworthy jealousy increases with the increase of faith and decreases with its decrease. Among the punishments for sins is that they weaken jealousy. Ibn Al-Qayyim said: "The essence of religion is jealousy, and he who has no jealousy has no religion." Jealousy has an innate aspect and an acquired aspect through habituation and cultivation. Praiseworthy jealousy can be strengthened by accompanying its people (those who possess it), supplicating, reading the biographies of the righteous, and staying away from sins.
