How can one increase their love for Allah and for the religion?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is astonishing that a person could believe in God yet not love Him. Even more astounding is failing to prioritize His love above all other loves. For Allah Almighty is the source of all beauty, majesty, perfection, and beneficence, and He is loved for His very essence. The proofs of His love, Glory be to Him, are His revealed Books, the call of His messengers, the innate disposition upon which He created His servants, and His countless blessings. His love, Exalted be He, is called forth by the perfection of His beauty and beneficence. The love of Allah is obligatory and is due to Him alone, for worship is the perfection of love and the perfection of submission. Allah Almighty has clarified the path to attaining His love through following the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, because whoever claims to love Allah yet does not follow the Messenger is a liar. The servant's love for Allah is realized by drawing near to Him through obligatory acts and supererogatory deeds, and Allah's love for the servant includes guiding him and caring for him. The love of Allah arises from knowing His names and attributes, and contemplating His creations and His blessings. The love of Allah is of two degrees: obligatory, which is the love that impels one to perform obligations, avoid prohibitions, and be patient with divine decrees; whoever does not achieve this is a liar in his claim. And commendable love, which is that which impels one to supererogatory acts of obedience, avoid doubtful matters, and be content with divine decrees.
