After nine months of marriage, and after the husband discovered that his wife is not righteous and is characterized by greed, bad manners, stirring up problems, repeated complaints, physical altercations, verbal abuse, and stealing his salary, and the intervention of the wife's family who defend her false positions; what is the ruling of Islamic law and religion on this matter, and what are the wife's rights and duties?

What has been mentioned indicates that you have not taken the path of reform with your wife, nor have you fulfilled your duty of guardianship (qawamah), and you have striven to appease her out of fear of scandal. If the wife does not become upright, there is no good for you in remaining with her, and your fear for your daughter does not justify overlooking your guardianship.

As for the wife's rights after divorce, she is entitled to her prompt and deferred dower (mahr), and to maintenance and lodging during her waiting period ('iddah). You are permitted to refrain from divorcing her until she waives some of her right, and religious scholars can mediate to judge what you both agree upon regarding the money. If the wife insists on taking her full right, it is a lesser harm than your remaining with her despite her ill character. Allah says: "But if they separate, Allah will enrich each from His abundance."

It is advised to be patient and try to reform the wife, as divorce is the last resort. The questioner is advised to renew repentance and be keen on learning religious matters and strengthening his connection with Allah.
