What is the authenticity of the hadith: "O gathering of Muslims, roll up your sleeves, for the matter is serious; and prepare yourselves, for departure is near; and take provisions, for the journey is distant; and lighten your burdens, for behind you is a steep ascent that none but the lightened ones shall overcome. Indeed, before the Hour are severe matters, great terrors, and a difficult time, in which the oppressors will gain power and the wicked will be prominent. Those who enjoin good will be oppressed therein, and those who forbid evil will be wronged. So, for that, prepare faith in Allah, resort to righteous deeds, compel your souls to them, and be patient in adversity; you will then attain everlasting bliss"?
This statement has no basis in the books of Sunnah. Ibn Wad'an mentioned it in his book "Al-Arba'un Al-Wad'aniyya" as a prophetic tradition (marfu') from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. However, the hadiths in this book are fabricated and false. Al-Dhahabi described Ibn Wad'an as "a perished individual accused of lying," and Al-Silafi stated, "It became clear to me, when I perused his 'Arba'un,' that there is great confusion indicating his mendacity and fabrication of chains of transmission." Ibn Hajar said that Al-Mizzi was asked about Al-Arba'un Al-Wad'aniyya and replied that nothing in it is authentic with that sequence and those chains of transmission, and that Ibn Wad'an stole it and fabricated chains of transmission for it, all of whose narrators are unknown. In conclusion, it is a contrived scandal and a concocted lie, and not every good statement can be attributed to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.
