The answer

It is authentically reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed for guidance for individuals and groups among the polytheists, just as he prayed for destruction and torment upon others. Examples of prayers for guidance include his supplication for Abu Hurayrah's mother and Daws. Examples of prayers against them include his supplication against Abu Jahl, the chieftains of Quraish, and the Confederates (Al-Ahzab). It becomes clear that the Prophet's supplication, peace and blessings be upon him, was made according to the circumstances of the disbelievers: if their hostility and harm intensified, he prayed against them; and if their guidance was hoped for or their hostility decreased, he prayed for their guidance.
