What are amulets?

Tamāʾim (amulets) is the plural of tamīmah, which is something hung to ward off the evil eye. It is forbidden and an imitation of the pre-Islamic era (Jāhiliyyah).

If one believes that it can bring benefit or harm independently of Allah, then this is major Shirk (polytheism). If one believes that it is merely a means (a cause), then it is minor Shirk, due to the Prophet (peace be upon him) saying: "Indeed, incantations (ruqa), amulets (tamāʾim), and love charms (tawalah) are Shirk."

The correct view is that it is not permissible to hang amulets, even if they contain verses from the Qur'an, due to the generality of the prohibition, to block the means (saddan li-dh-dharīʿah), and because the one carrying it might treat it disrespectfully.
