Is it permissible for my father to slaughter an animal to celebrate his new house before its construction is complete, and is it a condition that the slaughter takes place at the house, and is any sacrificial animal sufficient in place of a sheep?

The act of slaughtering when a house is completed or during its construction falls into two categories:

1. If the intention behind the slaughter is to ward off jinn, evil, or the evil eye, this is an objectionable act and may even amount to major polytheism (shirk) if it is done to appease thejinn and draw closer to them. This is because slaughter is an act of worship that must not be directed to other than Allah. 2. If the intention is to express joy and gratitude to Allah for the blessing, then it is permissible and recommended, and is called "al-Wakirah." There is no difference whether the slaughter occurs during construction, upon completion, at home, or at the butcher's.

Slaughtering, even if it is just a sheep or less, is recommended. It is not a condition that the slaughter be of a sheep, for it is authentically reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, made the wedding feast for Safiyyah with dates, dried yogurt, and clarified butter.

It is concluded that there is no harm in slaughtering as an expression of gratitude and joy to Allah, and not out of a false belief. It is preferable to slaughter away from the house if there is a concern of a false belief, in order to dispel the illusion that the slaughter in that specific location is beneficial, and to block the means leading to shirk.
