What are the allusions that one must be wary of, and what is the ruling on recalling past allusions without knowing the ruling or intention, and what is the ruling on uttering an allusion in a dream, and is uttering the word "separation" in romantic poems with the intention of travel considered an allusion, and is it obligatory to advise someone who utters allusions and swears by divorce, and what is the ruling on saying "I will divorce my wife" in a state of extreme distress, and is saying "I will call my wife's family to tell them to forgive me" considered an allusion to divorce despite not intending separation?
The cure for the disease of waswasah (whisperings/obsessive thoughts) is to completely and entirely disregard it. When the person afflicted by waswasah turns away from their whisperings, they will vanish. But whoever surrenders to them will find them increasing, to the point of driving them to madness. There is no obligation to refrain from allusions (to divorce), and divorce does not occur except with the intention (of divorce). Similarly, informing or narrating statements (about divorce) do not constitute divorce. And what you threatened your wife with, or mentioned to your friend that you would do – divorcing her – but did not do, is not a divorce. So, fear Allah and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Present yourself to some callers to Islam and scholars for treatment if these whisperings persist.
