What is the ruling on selling cosmetics (makeup) and adornments? Is there a difference between wholesale, online sales, and sales in physical stores? It is permissible to use cosmetics and beautifying tools, subject to the following conditions: that they do not contain any impurities (najāsa), that they are not harmful to the body, and that a woman does not display them in front of non-mahram men. This is the preponderant opinion, as ruled by the Permanent Committee for Issuing Fatwas, who permitted their sale to women who adorn themselves for their husbands or whose circumstances are unknown. As for Sheikh Al-Albani, he prohibited their use and sale, justifying this by citing imitation of disbelievers and altering Allah's creation. However, the preponderant view is that forbidden imitation is that which is exclusive to disbelievers and leads observers to believe that the person belongs to them, not something widespread among Muslims. Furthermore, the justification for prohibition based on altering Allah's creation is subject to reconsideration.
