Abu Mihjan, a Companion of the Prophet, was afflicted with drinking alcohol. Nevertheless, he did not abandon jihad. He participated in the Battle of al-Qadisiyyah. When Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) imprisoned him for drinking alcohol, he asked Sa'd's wife to release him, promising her that he would return to his shackles if he survived, or embrace martyrdom. She agreed. He rode one of Sa'd's horses and fought bravely in the battle. When the battle ended, he returned and put his leg back in the shackles. Sa'd then went and released him, and Abu Mihjan vowed never to drink alcohol again.
