Is it permissible to take from one’s parents’ money to pay for numerous, unknown-in-number expiations for oaths, given the difficulty of informing them of the reason and the difficulty of giving the money to the poor? Is it permissible to fast instead of feeding the poor? And are oaths sworn during days when the questioner was not praying counted?
Frequent swearing is blameworthy in Islamic law, and a Muslim must avoid it. Expiation (kaffara) becomes immediately obligatory upon breaking an oath. The questioner should perform expiation according to her financial status, whether she is affluent or in hardship. If she has sufficient funds, she must feed ten poor people, or clothe them, or free a slave. If she does not find the money, she must fast for three days for each oath. She is not required to delay the expiation until she finds the money, and her parents are not obliged to give her money for the expiation. She should calculate the days she missed prayers, as the preponderant opinion is that one who abandons prayer due to laziness is not considered a disbeliever.
