The question

Is it better, when observing devotion between the evening (Maghrib) and night (Isha) prayers, to limit oneself to reciting Surat Al-Fatihah and Surat Al-Ikhlas in each unit of prayer (rak'ah) for the purpose of increasing prostrations, and does a reward of a qintar for each unit of prayer result from that due to reciting ten verses, or is it better to recite one's daily portion (wird) from the Qur'an, and which of the two carries a greater reward and higher rank?

The answer

Traces have indicated the virtue of voluntary prayers between the 'Isha (night) prayers, which are called the prayer of heedlessness (Ghaflah) and the prayer of the penitent (Awābeen), and it is a cause for the forgiveness of sins. Scholars differed regarding what is better: prolonged standing (Qiyam) with fewer rak'ahs, or numerous rak'ahs and prostrations (Sujood) with shorter standing.

Those who said that prolonged standing is better cited the hadith: "The best of prayers is the prolongation of Qunoot." Imam An-Nawawi held the view that prolonging the standing is better than increasing the number of rak'ahs. Based on this, it is preferable to prolong the recitation.

As for those who said that increasing prostrations is better, then it is preferable to increase the number of rak'ahs. Some scholars elaborated, recommending prolonging standing at night and increasing bowing (Rukoo') during the day. This supports the view that prolonging recitation at night (between the 'Isha prayers) is better.

In all cases, the worshipper is rewarded, and it is hoped that they will not be written among the heedless and will attain the reward of performing night prayers.
