Is the Hadith of Anas ibn Malik, "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) did not abandon the Qunut in the Fajr prayer until Allah took his soul," authentic or weak?
This hadith is not authentically attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. There are three chains of transmission (turuq) from Anas, all of which are weak:
1. The First Chain: From the path of Abu Ja'far al-Razi, from al-Rabi' bin Anas, from Anas, which states: (The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, performed Qunut for a month, supplicating against them, then he abandoned it. As for the Fajr prayer, he continued to perform Qunut until he departed from this world). Abu Ja'far al-Razi was deemed weak by many scholars due to his poor memory and frequent errors.
2. The Second Chain: From the path of Isma'il al-Makki and Amr bin Ubayd, from al-Hasan, from Anas, which states: (The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman performed Qunut – and I believe he said: fourth – until I departed from them). Isma'il al-Makki and Amr bin Ubayd are both weak and their narrations are abandoned.
3. The Third Chain: From the path of Dinar bin Abdullah, the servant of Anas, from Anas, which states: (The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, continued to perform Qunut in the Fajr prayer until he died). Dinar bin Abdullah narrates fabricated reports from Anas, which are not permissible to mention.
A group of scholars has ruled this hadith to be weak and not valid for argumentation, including Ibn al-Jawzi, Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn al-Qayyim, Ibn Hajar, and al-Albani.
The most preponderant view is that performing Qunut in the Fajr prayer, except in times of calamity, is not legislated, as the continuous practice of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, until his departure from this world has not been authentically established.
