What is the Islamic ruling on Sheikh Abdul Basit's recitation of the Qur'an, and is there any truth to what is said about the prohibition of listening to him on the grounds that he "sang the Qur'an"?

Chanting the Qur’an is permissible, but it should not exceed the limits of musical tunes disliked by the early generations (Salaf). There is no harm in the recitation of Sheikh Abdul Basit and other reciters, and it is permissible to listen to it to gain the reward of listening and to benefit from learning Tajwid, as long as the reciter does not overdo the chanting to the point where it becomes like song tunes, for that is disliked.
