What is the meaning of "no one makes the religion difficult except that it overpowers him"?

Religion is ease, not hardship. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, warned against extremism and exaggeration in worship, lest it lead to cessation and boredom. Whoever attempts to contend with religion, religion will overcome and overwhelm him, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "No one will contend with the religion except that it will overcome him." Allah has commanded us to be moderate and balanced, for religion is built upon ease in its beliefs, acts of worship, and morals.

The beliefs are sound and simple, and the obligations are made easy. The five daily prayers are made easy in their timings and manner. Zakat is only obligatory upon the wealthy. Fasting is for one month a year, and Hajj is obligatory once in a lifetime for those who are able. Allah has commanded alleviation in cases of illness or travel, as He, the Almighty, says: "Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship."

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, encouraged aiming for perfection, approaching it, and giving glad tidings. He also advised a Muslim to utilize times of activity in worship, such as the early morning, the late afternoon, and a portion of the night travel, which are times when travel is easy and comfortable. Whoever follows this methodology will achieve their religious and worldly goals with comfort and tranquility. This Hadith lays down great principles for religion: the comprehensive facilitation of the Sharia, that hardship brings ease, performing what is possible of deeds, encouraging those who perform deeds, and a comprehensive instruction for journeying to Allah.
