Does Ibn Mas'ud's Hadith, "There is no envy except in two: a man whom Allah has given wealth...," contradict Abdullah ibn 'Umar's Hadith, "There is no envy except in two: a man whom Allah has given the Qur'an..."?
The two Hadith did not contradict each other regarding the mention of wealth. Rather, they differed concerning wisdom and the Qur’an, and there is no contradiction in this. Wisdom has been interpreted as the Qur’an, as knowledge, and as jurisprudence (fiqh). There is no doubt that the Qur’an is the origin of knowledge and jurisprudence in religion, and Allah revealed it to be known and to be judged by. Ibn Abd al-Barr said: "Wisdom is obedience to Allah, jurisprudence in His religion, and acting upon it. It is a light by which Allah guides whom He wills." Ibn al-Mulaqqin said: "The wisdom intended is the Qur’an." Ibn Hajar said: "What is meant by wisdom is the Qur’an, or it is more general than that, and its definition is: that which prevents ignorance and deters ugliness." Sheikh Muhammad al-Khudr said: "The definite article 'al-' in al-hikmah (the wisdom) is for designation, because what is meant by it is the Qur’an. What is meant by 'establishing it' is acting upon it absolutely, which is more general than its recitation, its teaching, and judging and issuing fatwas according to its dictates. So, there is no contradiction between the two wordings of the Hadith."
