Does Islam obligate a woman to marry merely for the sake of marriage, or is the foundation rather a sense of security, stability, affection, and the formation of a righteous family? And what is meant by "one whose character you approve of"? And can a woman reject a suitor if she dislikes his appearance or behavior, and will Allah punish her for rejecting a religious man if she dislikes him? And is it forbidden for her to live and die unmarried if she does not find what is best for her?

Marriage is subject to the five legal rulings (al-ahkam al-taklifiyyah). Marriage is recommended if the suitor's religiosity and character are pleasing, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "If someone whose religiosity and character you approve comes to you seeking marriage, then marry him. If you do not do so, there will be tribulation on Earth and widespread corruption." A woman has the right to refuse someone she does not deem suitable, because marriage is a relationship that entails many rights, and her permission must be sought for the marriage. There is no objection to accepting someone whose religiosity and character are pleasing, even if she does not feel love for him. It is not forbidden for a woman not to marry, provided that this is not out of disinclination towards the Sunnah.
